Blog entry 3

I'll be documenting whatever I had learnt during week 5 first, followed by what my team and I did for Practical 2 in a separate section.

Firstly, Week 5 was the most engaging lesson for me and I really enjoyed my time there because of the sketches that we had to do. Dr. Noel taught us a drawing style that doesn't require us to lift our wrist off the paper/canvas which is a style that's different than mine. I usually draw shorter lines and connecting them to draw what I have in mind, but this new style creates a straighter line, making it look much neater.

Then, Dr. Noel introduced to us 2 new types ways of drawing, to me at least, and they are the One-point Perspective and Two-point Perspective drawings. Below are examples of what each drawing is about.

One-point Perspective:

Based on the image above, it shows all drawings leading to one particular point, usually at the center of the canvas.

Two-Point Perspective:

Based on the image above, it shows the drawings leading to two separate points, which are far apart from each other on the canvas.

Right after this, We had to draw shapes and connect to each point, either One-point or Two-point perspective just to get the gist of it. Dr. Noel then showed us 2 pictures on the screen and we had to draw them on a piece of paper. Below is what I've drawn during this short session.

The drawing on top is a one-point perspective drawing of a milk carton and the one below is a two-point perspective drawing of a book. Dr. Noel then gave us homework to draw the coffee maker and a drawing of my teams eventual product after the COWS decision matrix.

Oh ya. forgot to mention last blog entry which idea my team and I decided on despite showing the decision matrix. Hence, we decided to go with the idea that the hairbrush is able to inject soap when we press on the button on the handle, which is what I have drawn for the two-point perspective drawing above. The coffee maker is drawn in the one-point perspective style.

After the drawing session, we moved on to Computer Aided Design (CAD). We used Fusion 360 from Autodesk and we have to try to familiarize ourselves with the basics from the instructions given on brightspace. One of the requirements that I had to create was a photo frame that's to be done on the CAD software. The embedded picture below is the photo frame I had created with clear instructions on brightspace. Learning to create this photo frame was such a fun experience for me!

Personally, I really enjoyed Week 5 lesson as it was definitely a stress reliever as we had the CP5095 module Test 1 on the Wednesday of the same week and the upcoming MST 2 weeks after the same week. I really enjoy using the Fusion 360 software to create 3D objects and try to play around with the software more when I have the time. Just from week 5, I have learned to create 3D objects with the help of Fusion 360. I feel that this software will be important and useful in the future, especially for the year 3 Capstone Project as we will have to design our product. We technically could use pen and paper for the design part, but I feel that using this software will be more useful as it will provide a neater and more accurate design of whatever product. Moreover, we can use the same file for 3D printing, which can help out in terms of prototyping and more. There is still much more to learn about the software, which might be helpful when creating my own product design.

Practical 2

Above are my team members, Yeung Juen (left), Kieron (center) and I'm on the right. We were supposed to have one more, but he was unfortunately unable to make it on that day. Practical 2 is all about cardboard, specifically cardboard joinery. Each team is tasked to create a pre-planned object using cardboard joinery and my team and I have decided to create a fish using cardboard! We initially planned to create a car, then we had an idea to create a rocket instead. Afterwards, Yeung juen asked us, what if we put something similar to 'fins' on the rocket body, then we got the idea of creating the fish, and here we are. Despite being a three man team, we were very proud of being able to create this creature.

In all honesty, we did not plan much about what we were going to do, so we did take some time to decide on what we were going to do. So we did not have any prior sketches before the experiment. We did do the pre-experiment assessment, but thought that was it. We were not very clear about the various types of joinery as well, so we had to watch some videos during the experiment itself. Despite all this, everyone in my team was calm towards each other, we had no disagreements at all and we were able to complete the task in time (with 6 different types of joinery, which are the flange, fold, slots, tab & slot, pipe cleaner and brass fastener).

Prior to the experiment day, I did go through the slides on information on cardboard as a material and I did learn quite a few things. One of which is that there are definitely more than 2 types of cardboards. I only thought there's the one ply cardboard(paperboard) and the single wall double face board, but there's more. I also did not know much about the flute in a cardboard. I only knew of its existence and did not find out more about it. As it turns out, cardboard is excellent in project construction. It is a sturdy material yet it is easy to cut, bend, fold or drill it.

Overall, here are some takeaways I feel that is important in the future. One of which is that it's not wrong to over-prepare myself for any group projects. I realized that my team did the bare minimum, but were still a bit clueless during the first few parts of the practical. Had we been more prepared for the practical, we would definitely know much more during the practical itself and perhaps do much better than what we have created. I also believe that cardboard is not just a material used to hold items for delivery. Each cardboard has its own usefulness and will definitely come to mind when I am going to construct anything in the future.

You have come to the end of my third blog entry, see you soon!
